TOOLS FOR SCHOOL

A checklist of the daily essentials for health and safety at school

Please ensure that your child brings a backpack to school everyday with the following items. Please check this backpack daily to replenish needed items and receive any important notices or information from our class or the school.

indoor running shoes

A pair of white-soled runners should be left at school for your child to use each day. Please send runners with velcro straps  to ensure your child's safety during learning & physical activities.

spare clothes

Ensure that there is always a full set of clothing in your child's backpack for accidents or spills. Check daily to remove soiled clothing and replace.

healthy snacks

A couple of small healthy snacks that your child could eat during our 15 minute snack break. Please keep "junk food" to a minimum as we use our snack times to learn about healthy choices.

water bottle

Please pack a reusable water bottle to be refilled every day. Water is the best option for your child to choose during snack or when thirsty throughout the day.

outdoor clothing

Be mindful of the weather and possible fluctuations throughout the day. We will be outside regularly during all months and seasons of the year so proper footwear and clothing (including mitts, hats/toques, and scarves) are required every day.

BUILD INDEPENDENCE

Choosing items and learning to pack their own backpack is a great age-appropriate skill for your child to work on this year. Ask them to assist you to pick out healthy snacks, pack them in a bag or lunch kit, practice how to fill a water bottle, choose a spare clothes outfit, load up their backpack, or collect needed outdoor clothing to match the weather forecast.

All of these tasks work on fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, and authentic critical thinking skills.

Build these skills throughout the year and slowly lessen the amount of assistance you provide for trickier tasks as your child's skills progress.
